Position Summary:

The Director of Nursing serves as a member of the Medical Center’s Executive Team and is responsible for the standards of patient care and nursing practice.  Responsible for planning, organizing, and controlling the department of nursing and patient services.  Have responsibility, authority and accountability for nursing practice, nursing education, and nursing research activities. The role is responsible for nursing practice being consistent with current laws and regulations governing nursing practice.  The functions of the Director of Nursing are patient care, resource, and fiscal management.  The role is responsible for the effective administration of patient care in accordance with established policies and procedures of Black River Medical Center which includes organization, planning, direction, and evaluation.  The Director of Nursing participates with Executive Staff, Medical Staff, and Leaders of clinical areas in the allocation, operation plans and policies, as well as participates in decision making structures and processes for the Medical Center.  This person is responsible for interpreting and representing patient care and nursing in the community and to the other health care providers in the community. The Director of Nursing is also responsible for the development of policies and procedures to ensure standards that meet CMS, State Licensure, TJC, OSHA, Public Health Department, and Center for disease control requirements.


The practice of the Director of Nursing is based upon the Missouri Nurse Practice Act, Missouri State Board of Nursing Registered Profession Nursing Position Statement and the guidelines set forth by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The Director of Nursing is responsible for the Care Management Program, including social services and utilization review – monitoring care from perspective of medical necessity, quality of care, appropriateness of decision making, and place of services and length of stay

  • Strongly Advises a Bachelor’s degree, but years of service may be adequate. Graduate of an approved school of nursing with current licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse in the State of Missouri / and or compact agreement State License. Certification by ANA in Nursing Administration is desirable.

Skills and Experience:

  • Minimum of 3 years of progressive experience in administrative and / or nursing leadership. Demonstrated knowledge of current leadership, management and quality improvement concepts and the ability to participate in developing and implementing organizational. Strategies to address opportunities to improve the delivery of patient care. Demonstrated knowledge of current theoretical approaches to the delivery of patient / nursing care and the Strategies for examining and applying relevant concepts.


  • Current Registered Professional Nurse licensure in the State of Missouri. Current BLS Certification. ACLS/PALS within one year of hire. Possesses skills necessary to perform Safely as evidenced by state certification or licensure..
